I think that a variable that keeps a compass bearing that Andre can compare to a certain range while within a certain locale would be very useful. For example, while pointing your device to the display on the south wall of your room, a different command would be sent than if you pointed at a different wall in the same room.

That's a cool idea. Let me look into it.

It might be more efficient to enable a method to query the current compass direction at a given instant than to keep a variable updated. The compass changes so rapidly that I'd have to impose a cadence to the check, probably no more frequently than once a second, and frankly the compass can change a lot in a second.

So what if I made it so you'd set a Parameter which would let you fetch the curent compass heading and store it into a variable? Since Parameters are executed synchronously in the order they're listed on a Button, you could query the compass at the top and then use a script call or a bunch of Execute Conditional statements to trigger the behavior you desire.

That would be perfect.

Ok I've done some preliminary investigation and it's not quite as simple as I'd hoped. The sensors operate on an asynchronous listener model, which means I can't easily just make a one-shot call to read the sensor info at the beginning of a Button's execution. I have to enable the sensors, register a callback listener and wait for the sensors to post the data to me. I can't just turn these on and continually update Andre variables as that would be expensive for both battery and processing.

I'm probably going to build out a more robust sensor-based set of features which intelligently registers/unregisters the sensors efficiently and buffers the values until you ask for them in Andre, then push the most current values into the Andre variables for you to use. I'll add a few preferences that lets you set which sensors are enabled so users can manage this functionality to save battery life, etc.

This means I might as well add all the sensors so you'll have access to (assuming your device supports them) ambient light level, proximity sensor, accelerometer, magnetometer, ambient temperature, pressure, gyro, etc. While many of these aren't very interesting as a one-shot reading, perhaps once they're in I can enhance the feature to allow for more active interpretation, say recognizing when you sweep the remote through the air in a certain direction. I'll see how this pans out.

For the time being, I'm going to push this into the 2.4 to-do list though, because it's a bunch of work and I need to finish the 2.2 final release including a bunch of working examples for people. I'd estimate I'll have a working beta of the sensor stuff in the next couple of weeks or so.

That sounds awesome! Don't kill yourself building that feature in, though! It sounds like a lot of work and it was only an idea that I had for future plans.
Right off the bat I can think of several very cool ways of using that, though, such as light dimming control using your phone as a magic wand. :)

I hadn't put a lot of thought before on sensor support, but once I heard your idea and started letting my imagination run a bit, I think there's some really creative and clever ways to use them. It's not a huge effort, I just want to do it right with all the right Preferences and Parameters support to make it a well-implemented feature, and that just takes some time.
